4 Stars Part 8 of the “Secret Wars” series; nice for collectors
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the twelve-part “Secret Wars” comic book series (and the 70th anniversary of Marvel Comics), Hasbro is releasing these 2-figure/1-comic sets. Each set includes two highly-articulated 3-3/4″ scale action figures (similar to the figures sold individually in the Marvel Universe line) and a reprint of one of the comic books in the “Secret Wars” series. “Secret Wars” was a groundbreaking storyline because in had all of the popular Marvel heroes (X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Hulk, etc.) team up to face all of the big-time supervillains. I’m not a comics expert, but I always knew “Secret Wars” for being the source of Spider-Man’s black costume, which would later lead to the creation of his nemesis Venom.
And that’s why this is a good set to have. This is #8 in the 12-part series, but this is the one that introduces Spider-Man’s new black costume (as the comic book cover states). AND it comes with a black-costume Spidey figure, too. The other figure in the set is Magneto, the X-Men’s arch-rival.
The figures are of the popular 3-3/4″ scale (similar to the Star Wars figures, for example) and have many joints for nice posability. But with the added articulation, the figures are less durable and may not last as long if kids play rough with them. These figures are good for kids as well as collectors, but I have a feeling they’d be better suited for the collectors, who wouldn’t subject them to much action. But, again, they can be fun for kids, too. Especially if the kid wants to read the classic comic book stories.
The comic book is printed on glossy magazine-type paper (as opposed to traditional “comic book paper” from days gone by), but may be bent inside the packaging. (They often are.) This issue is #8 of 12, so you’d be jumping right into the middle of the story arc.
The Spider-Man figure features his black “alien ooze” costume as depicted on the cover of the comic book. It may or may not be the same Spidey sculpt as the previously released Marvel Universe figures (red & blue costume and black costume). The difference between this black Spidey and the one released individually is that this figure is plain black. Just black and white. The other figure featured blue highlights on the dark costume. This one is solid black with the white spider design.
Magneto is a nice figure. He looks a little short-waisted, but that might be an optical illusion. His helmet is part of his head sculpt and cannot be removed. His purple cape is a separate piece made from a rubbery plastic. It hangs loosely from Magneto’s neck and can probably be removed if you can work it around the helmet. The cape is molded with a built-in fold, which kind of threw me off at first. And Magneto’s belt thing (cummerbund?) is made of the rubbery material and wrapped around the figure’s waist. It can be slid up and down, but won’t come off.
Neither figure comes with any weapon or accessory.
I like the Marvel Universe action figure line because of the simplistic designs taken straight from the classic comic books. No weird gimmicks, no weird styles. Just the basics. And they are a nice size, too.
This is a nice set for collectors and superhero enthusiasts of all ages. Part 8 of the “Secret Wars” series puts the spotlight on Spider-Man’s new black suit, with the classic cover art and the included Spidey action figure. The Magneto figure is pretty nice as well. I think Magneto might be the best part of this set, as he’s a major supervillain that can be added to your Marvel Universe collection.
The “Secret Wars” series introduces a new generation to the classic superhero storyline. Kids might like the toys, or they might enjoy reading the comic books.
